Farewell Martinique

We made it! We finally have left Martinique. It took us only… a year! Very strange feeling, very strange… especially now that I look at it from another island, just 250 Nm away.

This is our COVID year flag, miles sailed: hmmm…?

It was so easy to leave, yet so hard! It’s like our friend Andrew said: “This (Martinique) is the best place to be” (well… for Andrew, any place where he is, is the best place to be – what a lucky guy!) and… he was right! For me, Martinique means friends. Our personal circle of crazy people, who we love. Over the last 2 years, we’ve collected quite a number. Honestly, at some point, it was quite an easy decision to keep on hanging out with them rather than sailing back and forth between very few open islands around us. On the other hand, it was also a bit like in freakkin’ Hotel California – you can check-in any time you want, but you can never leave (the Eagles, BTW:)), because every time we actually wanted to leave, something came up.

Thank you! beautiful people on:
Maya, Providence – Bewitched, Kairos5, Hangtime, Promyk, 2Go, Little Cloud, Bajka, Pilgrim, Tamasine, Esprit, Out of Africa, Golightly, Rhapsode, Scoot, Freebooter, Fair Wind, Nimrod, Tiki-Tour, Zarafet, CasaToo, Cezar, Kepasa and many more including our land squad, meaning Kasia, Bartek, Karolina, Filip, Alex, Eric, Aurelia, Yves, and Messieur Best-Ice-cream!

It was a pleasure to meet you, to spend time with you, to be under lockdown and enjoy little happy moments in-between. Even in Saharan dust and wet tropical waves. Thanks for music quizzes, Thursday beach barbies, music at 8p.m., and Mexican train dominoes!!!

Indeed – Martinique was the best place to be!

away we sailed, not far though…

We said goodbyes to many people in the last few weeks. Some of them we hope to see soon, some of them we probably won’t (but who knows!). In the end, Mount Pelé decided not to explode*, even if we all (the Covid Team of Sainte Anne) kinda expected that. You know… when the world stops, weird things happen… As that massive volcano started to fade away in the clouds, our traveler spirit kicked back in. Don’t laugh… we made more miles last month than during the whole covid year!

* Volcanic activity is present in the neighborhood, and earthquakes happen about once a week around here. In fact, about a month ago, La Soufriere on the island of Saint Vincent, 50Nm south from Martinique, has started to talk and has been spitting dust and lava ever since. As much as it is a quite spectacular natural phenomenon, it also has a devastating impact on local communities. As you know from our previous posts, the people of Saint Vincent are very poor, and if you would consider helping them, that’s a superb idea. They need basic things that actually money can buy. Be generous! It is good for you too! You can donate at UN, Unicef, Red Cross.

Now we are in Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, Dutch – French combo island, where we are preparing for the passage to Colombia. Everybody is asking us about our plans. We have some, but we learned the hard way, that the universe is laughing at our planning, so we go with the flow… We do some sightseeing, a lot of swimming in beautiful blue waters, we are passing final tests at school, and doing some boat projects, some work, and vaccinations: starting with terrifying yellow fever, and up the list, to the recent “world stopper” covid-19.
